This oyster reef site serves under-represented residents in Southern Brooklyn who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The oyster reef serves as a research tool for residents, and has been designed with site-specific safety accommodations due to the compromised state of the Coney Island Creek.

Coney Island Creek is a hidden gem in Coney Island. Fishermen use the pier attached to Kaiser Park and they are local experts on the creek. While we’re in the water, they’ll sometimes watch and interact from the pier. They’ve been like guardians to the reef making sure that no one has tampered with the reef. I was surprised to see how well the oysters grew after just one month of being installed. This site is also home to a population of wild oysters lining the creek!
