Volunteer WITH US

View the upcoming events and sign up for a day of restoring reefs to New York City’s waterways below.

Billion Oyster Project’s volunteer activities all take place at our shell pile on Governors Island. We mostly focus on cleaning shell substrate and reef ball fabrication, but also help out the Fabrication team with shell pile maintenance occasionally.

New dates are released on the 15th of every month (until November) & events are removed from the site once they have been filled up, so if you don’t see anything below then just check back again.

At this time, our public volunteer days are limited to participants who are 18+, or 16+ when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our volunteer activities involve physically demanding work, and we prioritize the safety of all participants.

Why oysters?

Oyster reefs have the power to transform New York Harbor. They provide habitat for hundreds of species, filter water, and can help shield New York City shorelines from storm damage.

Did you know—the Big Apple was once the oyster capital of the world?
