Billion Oyster Project announces new partnership with Bain & Company to benefit oyster restoration in NYC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK, NY April 21, 2022 — Billion Oyster Project is excited to announce that it has been selected as the sole recipient of Bain & Company New York’s 2022 Adopt-An-Organization Program. This award, voted on by Bain’s New York-based employees, will provide significant support to the Governors Island-based organization on a mission to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives.

Olivia Massey, a member of Billion Oyster Project’s Young Leadership Committee, entered the organization into the annual competition hosted by the global management consulting firm. Throughout the coming year, Billion Oyster Project will receive pro-bono support in the critical areas of:

  • Corporate and individual volunteering on Governors Island

  • Fundraising support in the form of donation drives and fundraising via the Bain Social Impact auction

  • General consulting support of Billion Oyster Project’s Community Engagement, Education, and Restoration teams

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Bain to more effectively engage local communities in the hands-on stewardship of New York Harbor,” said Ashley Davis, Corporate Giving Officer at Billion Oyster Project. “Our small, New York based crew looks forward to leveraging the skills and expertise of a globally recognized firm to get more people to the water’s edge.”

Billion Oyster Project aims to engage one million people in the effort to restore one billion oysters by 2035, and is currently on pace to introduce its 100 millionth oyster to the waterways around New York City in 2022.

Bain & Company has its own ambitious goal, to invest $1 billion in pro-bono consulting by 2025. Billion Oyster Project is proud to be part of the Adopt-An-Org Program, and thrilled to benefit from the firm’s commitment to social impact.

“We are incredibly excited to be partnering with Billion Oyster Project to support their goals around environmental restoration and climate resilience, as these fit tightly with our own social impact focus areas,” said Allison Gans, head of Bain’s New York Office.

About Billion Oyster Project

Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit organization on a mission to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Why oysters? Their reefs provide habitat for many marine species, have the ability to filter water, and help shield New York City shorelines from storm damage. Founded on the belief that restoration without education is temporary, and observing that learning outcomes improve when students have the opportunity to work on real restoration projects, Billion Oyster Project collaborates with public schools. The crew designs STEM curriculum for NYC schools through the lens of oyster restoration, and engages Urban Assembly New York Harbor School students in large-scale restoration projects. The organizations has collected nearly two million pounds of discarded oyster shells from 75+ NYC restaurants and has engaged 11,000 volunteers in preparing those shells to be seeded with oyster larvae. The project has introduced 75 million oysters across 18 restoration sites and 14.5 acres of New York Harbor with the help of more than 8,000 students.
