For the third year in a row, Billion Oyster Project is proud to be an 11th Hour Racing grantee in the organization’s “Environmental Restoration” category.

Over the next year, 11th Hour Racing will support:

  • The production of more than 6.5 million juvenile oysters, to be introduced to the waters off Soundview Park in the Bronx.

  • Shell collection in New York City — recycling around 350,000 pounds of shells among 75 restaurants.

  • The engagement of 1,500 volunteers who travel to Governors Island every year to advance our oyster restoration operations.

“We are grateful that 11th Hour Racing continues to share our passion for cleaner waterways and healthier ecosystems,” says Charlotte Boesch, Shell Collection Manager at Billion Oyster Project. “From diverting shells from the waste steam to experimenting with plastic-free materials, this partnership is making a difference in New York Harbor.”

Last year, Billion Oyster Project’s work was featured in 11th Hour Racing’s “Choose Magic” video. The video has been viewed more that 114,000 times since it was launched in October 2021!

11th Hour Racing was founded in 2010 to team up  with the sailing and coastal communities, the marine industry, and the biggest names in the sport to promote healthy ocean practices and solutions. We were thrilled to welcome the 11th Hour Racing Team to our 2022 Student Symposium in June, and excited to see that 11th Hour Racing was the Official Sustainability Sponsor of the Hall of Fame Open, and the Environmental Awareness Sponsor of the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals these past weeks!
