THE EXPERIENCE

Teaching Outdoors

New York City, and specifically New York Harbor, is a great place for outdoor learning! Join Billion Oyster Project staff to practice 3 stations for waterfront learning, learn best practices for bringing students into the field, and tips to help you prepare for field teaching.

This workshop will center the monumental outdoor sculptural installation by Mohawk artist Alan Michelson, currently on view on Governors Island, and will highlight Lenape history and oysters in New York Harbor.

At Billion Oyster Project, we strongly believe that outdoor learning can encompass any educational discipline and that field learning is possible and engaging for all age groups.

In this session teachers can expect to:

  • Learn best practices for planning and preparing field-based learning experiences
  • Explore BOP's outdoor lessons, and consider how they can be used in your classroom and outside
  • Connect with other Billion Oyster Project teachers

$20 fee. FREE for Title 1 schools — inquire about the discount code.

CTLE credits will be provided to those who complete this training.

Thanks to the Billion Oyster Project partners and funders: New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin and Council Members Christopher Marte, Gale Brewer, Carmen De La Rosa, Shirley Aldebol, Vickie Paladino, James F.
