Oysters are a Keystone Species

Students complete a jigsaw reading or collaborative sensemaking activity to figure out the many important roles oysters play in the New York Harbor ecosystem—as a source of food, water clearers, habitat builders, and shoreline protectors. They build foundational knowledge of how oysters function as a keystone species.

Pacing: 1 class period (~45 min).

Logistics: Make a copy of the lesson plan, slides, and handouts. Print enough handouts for each student.
