Role overview
Billion Oyster Project’s Environmental Educator is an energetic seasonal employee who genuinely enjoys working with students and teachers. The Environmental Educator will be part of a small team of educators who will be the outward face of Billion Oyster Project for teacher and student groups, much of which will take place on our Floating Classroom. The Floating Classroom is a ferry that will provide school group programs for students and their teachers to immerse themselves in the work of Billion Oyster Project.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities:
- Lead floating classroom educational activities for student/teacher groups
- Support in leading other outdoor and in-class programming for student/teacher groups
- Assist in preparing and maintaining any gear or materials relevant to programming
- Participate in prep work, debriefs and required tracking and follow-up for the above programs
The Environmental Educator’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Support the reporting of students engaged to maintain data for metric tracking and evaluation of programs
- Support inventory, procurement, and deliveries for the Education Department
- Assist with the monitoring and maintenance of our Oyster Research Stations
- Support additional Education and Restoration events in the field as needed
Required Qualifications
- 1+ years of proven successful teaching experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, environmental science, biology, policy or a related field
- Ability to start Tuesday August 18, with term ending on December 18, 2026
- The ability to work 4 days per week in person (Tuesdays-Fridays), on Governors Island or at various field locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledgeable about New York Harbor
- Excellent writing, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
- Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude
- Ability to work collaboratively between various teams/departments and on multiple projects
- Adaptability in modifying courses of action as needed
- Ability to work in all types of weather
- Comfortable in traveling independently across all 5 boroughs
- CPR/First Aid AED certified or willingness to complete certification

Salary & Benefits
This is an up to 26 hour per week position, with hours based on scheduled programming. The hourly rate for theSeasonal Education Coordinator is $25 per hour. Benefits are not included.

About: The Billion Oyster Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. The Billion Oyster Project is fueled by the passion and commitment of the team. Our Flagship School: The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School’s mission is to provide a college-preparatory education built upon New York City's maritime experience that instills in students the ethics of environmental stewardship and the skills associated with careers on the water. New York Harbor School offers career and technical education (CTE) programs in 7 areas of marine science, technology, policy, and engineering.

Employment Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an Employment Visa at this time.
Work Location: Employees of Billion Oyster Project must reside within the tri-state area and be able to commute daily to Governors Island unless otherwise noted in the job description.
