Shell Recycling Seasonal Coordinator

The BOP Shell Recycling Seasonal Coordinator: provides essential operational and administrative support for Billion Oyster Project’s Shell Recycling Program and food & beverage partnerships. Reporting to the Shell Recycling Manager, this role assists with the daily logistics of shell collection, partner onboarding, and on-island operations. The Seasonal Coordinator plays a key role in keeping the program running smoothly through strong organizational skills, attentive partner communications, and hands-on support across events and field operations.

Billion Oyster Project’s Seasonal Shell Recycling Seasonal Coordinator assists with various activities related to the Shell Recycling Program operations. This includes helping with day-to-day collection logistics and operational hiccups, helping to ensure program efficiencies, helping to expand the program to new restaurants, maintaining restaurant relationships with regular communication, helping to oversee contractors’ shell deliveries to curing sites, re-engaging restaurants through education or communications campaigns, and conducting some administrative duties. This “customer”-facing role requires timely communication with contractors and restaurant partners experiencing operational issues while maintaining a positive, solution-oriented attitude.

Core Responsibilities:

Restaurant Logistics, Operations, & Customer Service: 65%

• Support the day-to-day logistics of the Shell Recycling Program, including coordinating with restaurant partners, third-party collection operators, and internal teams.
• Assist with onboarding new restaurant and hospitality shell recycling partners, including managing administrative paperwork, welcome communications, and initial program setup.
• Coordinate shell recycling on Governors Island, working with the island’s waste management team to ensure efficient shell collection.
• Maintain on-site inventory at the Shell Pile warehouse and manage Lobster Place inventory records off-site.
• Coordinate contractor shell dumpster deliveries for early morning (6am) and assist with maintenance and upkeep of shell holding depot(s).
• Coordinate oyster shell donations and retrievals for external partners as needed.
• Assist the Shell Recycling Manager with tracking incoming curing shell and outgoing cured shell for projects.

Partner Education & Staff Briefings: 25%

• Assist in maintaining strong engagement with current restaurant partners through frequent email and phone communications, in-person education, and collaborative events and campaigns.
• Support in conducting 8+ staff briefings per month with front of house and back of house staff of our restaurant partners, to ensure restaurant team members are informed on program procedures and partner-facing communications (in Spanish and English preferred)
• Occasionally assist the Communications Team with marketing coordination and logistics for campaigns related to shell recycling partners, including website updates and blog content.

Support — Billion Oyster Party: 10%

• Work with the Shell Recycling Manager and BOP Party production team to coordinate day-of logistics
• Be the point of contact for Shell Recycling Volunteers and Earth Matter compost volunteers before and during the event.
• Help coordinate BOP Staff assignments with Development Team

• Bachelors or Associates Degree and 1 or more years of experience coordinating, customer service, and/or project management experience OR 3 or more years of coordinating, customer service, and/or project management experience
• Strong IT skills with proficiency in Google Apps suite, Smartsheets, Microsoft Office software
• Ability to navigate NYC, travel across the boroughs solo, etc. This job may require 3-4 days of travel a week around NYC to restaurant accounts, curing sites, Governors Island, etc.
• Ability to navigate a minimum of 50 lbs and occasionally work outside; sometimes in inclement weather conditions
• Ability to make decisions that improve day-to-day procedures, practices, and efficiency
• Ability to work proactively and independently, and know when to escalate an issue
• Ability to work collaboratively between various teams/departments and on multiple projects

• Strong relationship-building and customer service skills
• Interest in NYC sustainability, zero waste initiatives, food industries, and ocean conservation
• Working proficiency in Spanish
• Proficiency in Google Workspace, Smartsheets, Squarespace, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (Indesign, Illustrator, etc)
• Effective communicator with strong public speaking skills
• Ability to analyze complex situations quickly and devise pragmatic, on-the-spot solutions
• Driver’s License or willingness to obtain one
• Speaking proficiency in Spanish

This is an up to 35 hour per week position ending on December 24, 2026.
The hourly rate for the Seasonal Shell Recycling Coordinator is $25 per hour. Benefits are not included.

Work Location: Employees of Billion Oyster Project must reside within the tri-state area and be able to commute daily to Governors Island unless otherwise noted in the job description.
